Job description:
•Oversees and manages the daily operations of the Pearland Fire Department which includes a staff of both career and volunteer personnel. Interacts and consults with senior staff regarding overall management, staff motivation and morale and policy development and implementation.
•Meets with individuals, community groups and leaders to determine needs and issues of the community.
•Develops, oversees, and implements new and innovative programs and services that emphasize creative problem solving.
•Prepares and monitors annual department budget projections, justification and presentation to City Council. Prepares and approves purchase order and bid specifications.
•Evaluates Department operations and creates long range plans for equipment, personnel and facilities, anticipating future needs of the Department and City. Supervises safety and emergency preparedness activities.
•Advises and provides direction on the development and enforcement of laws, ordinances and regulations relating to fire code, plan review and inspection of businesses through the office of Fire Marshal.
•Attends City Council meetings to respond to officials and citizen concerns or to monitor direction of City Council policies and procedures.
•Coordinates educational programs with area schools and community centers. Fosters and promotes servant leadership within the organization. Prepares reports and keeps City Manager informed of department activities.
•Serves as “essential personnel” and is required to remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man made disaster, or any other event the City Manager deems necessary.

Job Requirements


Education, training, experience:
•Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university, in fire fighting, public administration or related field is required; plus ten (10) years related experience in fire suppression operation required, with five (5) years experience as a Captain or higher; experience in a combination paid/volunteer Fire Department preferred.
•Texas State Advanced Firefighter Certification required. Basic Instructor Certificate. Basic Fire and Arson Investigation Certificate preferred. National Fire Academy Executive Officer’s Program preferred. Valid, Texas Driver’s License.
